Photo contest
PHILLIPS – Sign-up for the Phillips Old Home Days photo contest will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, at Phillips Hardware.
Photos must be no smaller than 5 by 7 or larger than 8 by 10 and ready to hang. Pictures must have a title and fit within the four categories: People, Scenery, Wildlife and Domestic. Animal pictures will be judged and ribbons awarded. For more information, call Barbara at 639-5151.
Road closing
LIVERMORE FALLS – A section of Stricklands Road may be closed at times this week into next week to allow the railroad company to fix the railroad tracks.
“If one section of the road is closed, the other section will be open,” town representative Faith Nichols said Monday.
Rummage sale
SALEM – The Salem United Methodist Church will sponsor a giant rummage sale to benefit the church building fund from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14, at the Salem Community Building on Route 142. The sale will be held rain or shine.
Hot dogs and drinks will be available. Proceeds will help with a major renovation project to raise the 100-plus-year-old building and have it set onto a new foundation. Plans to repair the steeple are also in the works.
Society speaker
STRATTON – Ruey Stevens Baldwin, author of “There was a Land” and former resident of the drowned village of Flagstaff, will speak at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, at the Dead River Area Historical Society.
Baldwin interviewed many former residents of the village and has compiled short stories about life in Flagstaff. Her book will be available for purchase and she will sign copies.
The Dead River Area Historical Society is open every weekend during July and August from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. On display are artifacts, manuscripts and photographs that have been donated or loaned by interested townspeople and descendants of original families of the Dead River Region.
Collections from 1850 on include old carpentry and logging tools, china, glass, church organ, furniture from native families, a complete schoolroom, a memorial room to the “lost” towns of Flagstaff and Dead River, the lineage of several native families and a host of memorabilia from native homesteads.
Mushroom walk
RANGELEY – The public is invited to join the Natural Science Program mushroom walk with presenters Michaeline Mulvey and Ted Elliot from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14, at the Wilhelm Reich Museum on Dodge Pond Road.
The program will be held rain or shine and will begin at Orgonon’s sheltered classroom, although most of the time will be spent hiking one of Orgonon’s trails.
Mulvey and Elliot will given a talk while participants examine a variety of examples in nature. Learn which mushrooms are edible and which are best left for observation.
Comfortable shoes are recommended as well as bug spray and a bottle of water. Participants may also want to bring a pad and pen for taking notes.

Library meeting
LIVERMORE – The annual meeting of the Livermore Library Association will be held on Wednesday night, Aug. 17, at 7 p.m. at the library, located at 22 Church St. in Livermore. Election of officers will be held. The public is invited and encouraged to attend.
Flower show
PHILLIPS – Arrangements for the Phillips Old Home Days Flower Show may be dropped off from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, at the Phillips Public Library.
Categories include children’s: make your favorite toy into a vase or one stem wildflower in a glass soda bottle. Children may enter in adult categories and will be judged separately.
The adult category includes wreaths and swags, moss gardens, surprise us arrangement, one stem in vase may consist of more than one bloom, live plants that preferably will sit on the floor as table space is limited.

Foul shoot
PHILLIPS – Members of Zone Coalition will sponsor the second annual foul shoot from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19, at the Old Gym on Depot Street during Phillips’ Old Home Days.
Ages 12 and under will vie for a trophy proclaiming who sunk the most consecutive shots from 2 to 3 p.m. Contenders over the age of 12 will have their chance between 3 and 4 p.m.
“We had such a great turnout last year, so we thought we’d offer it again. It gives people a chance to see the progress we’ve made in our efforts to create a community center in Phillips and hopefully encourage people to donate time and/or money to the project,” said Dave Robie, Zone Coalition chairman. “There is a lot of energy and excitement directed to the Old Gym right now. We don’t want to lose that,” he added.
Last year’s event found Greg Keating of Phillips and Eric Taylor of Oakland in a shoot-off, with Taylor winning the trophy for the over age 12 group. Luke Paul of Phillips won for the 12 and under age category with 16/25 shots completed.
