LEWISTON – A road work mistake Wednesday night will keep part of Main Street dark, possibly through the weekend.

Crews from Northern Utilities accidentally cut some electrical conduit while they were digging up the intersection of Main and Sabattus streets Wednesday.

That conduit led to Main Street lamps between Bates Street and Central Maine Medical Center.

The outage should affect only street lamps and not traffic signals, according to Public Services Director Dave Jones. Crews had difficulty getting the wires back through conduit Thursday and would keep trying today.

“Hopefully, it should be fixed by Friday,” Jones said. “If not, it might be early next week before they get it fixed.”

Northern Utilities crews are replacing the company’s cast-iron pipes under Lewiston’s streets.
