PORTLAND – Scott Hewitt, the Caribou truck driver charged in connection with a fatal crash on the Maine Turnpike in late July, has been moved to a Portland jail.

Hewitt was moved on Wednesday from the Aroostook County Jail in Houlton to the Cumberland County Jail. He was being held there without bail Thursday night.

A jail official in Aroostook County said Hewitt was moved to the Portland lockup because of outstanding warrants against him in that city.

Hewitt was scheduled to appear at a bail hearing before a Superior Court judge in Portland this morning.

Hewitt, 32, was driving his tractor-trailer July 29 in Hallowell when it slammed into and crushed a car driven by 40-year-old Tina Turcotte of Scarborough. Turcotte died several days later.

After the crash, Hewitt was arrested on two warrants that resulted from his arrest a year ago, when he was accused of falsifying his logbook and removing a sticker from his truck that designated it as being out of service. The warrants were issued when he failed to appear in court in April for a plea hearing. He was also charged with operating after license suspension in connection with the turnpike crash.

Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap said Hewitt has 63 prior convictions and 23 suspensions, compared to 42 and 19 reported previously.

On Aug. 6, Hewitt was arrested again in Presque Isle after police said they spotted him driving a pickup truck in that city.

On Wednesday, Superior Court Justice Ellen Gorman approved a motion by the Cumberland County district attorney’s office to revoke Hewitt’s bail because of warrants for his arrest for failure to appear in court, said Joanna Morrissey of the DA’s office.

Prosecutors say Hewitt failed to appear in Cumberland County Superior Court in April on charges of falsifying his logbook and removing an out-of-service sticker from his truck in August 2004. Hewitt was also wanted for failure to pay a fine for marijuana possession, Morrissey said.

Today’s hearing will give Hewitt a chance to be heard on his bail revocation.
