A 1955-model Ford County Sedan was delivered yesterday to the Lewiston Police Department to replace a pickup truck. The blue and white four-door station wagon has a trailer hitch to haul the LPD’s boat, will carry a stretcher and first aid equipment as well as the usual police two-way radio, emergency lights and other items. The vehicle, which has an automatic transmission similar to the new cruisers, can be used to transport several men to sites of emergencies, for cruiser duty, carrying signs and painting equipment and many other important functions of the police department.

Thousands of small, unidentified insects gathered near the Little Androscoggin Bridge in New Auburn Wednesday night, causing at least a temporary change in the area’s business flow. The bugs gathered near Lou’s Variety store on Mill Street in such numbers that an employee, Mrs. Bellefleur, closed the shop at about 8:45 p.m., waiting for the numbers to diminish.

She said they had appeared both Monday and Tuesday nights, but not to this extent. “I’ve never had anything like this happen before,” Mrs. Bellefleur said. “They’re very ugly.”

Auburn Fire Department Deputy Chief Leslie Titus was at the scene but was unable to identify the insects. “I have no idea (what they are),” he said, “unless they’ve got something to do with the gypsy moths. They looked something like snow on the street – they were quite noticeable, you could see them in the (car) headlights.”
