AUBURN – One man was seriously injured and another man was in custody after a stabbing on Lake Street early today.

The stabbing occurred in the street, near the intersection of Lake and Court streets.

A man was stabbed in the stomach after a brawl in the street shortly before 1 a.m., police said.

Another man was caught by officers as he went down Goff Hill on foot, police said. That man was being questioned at the police station early this morning.

Neither man was identified. Police said both are adults from the area.

Police who were called to the scene found the injured man bleeding as he lay on a sidewalk between Court and Cliff streets. Investigators were speaking with several possible witnesses, but it was unclear how many people were involved in the fight.

“There was some type of confrontation, but right now, we don’t know exactly what it involved,” police Sgt. Scott Watkins said.

One witness said he saw a large, shirtless man running through woods toward Court Street after the stabbing. Police said that was the man they later took into custody.

Police cordoned off a section of Lake Street as officers and rescue crews arrived at the scene. The injured man lay on the sidewalk, moving very little, as paramedics worked on him. A sneaker lay 30 feet away beside a fire hydrant.

By 1:45 a.m., no charges had been filed and the victim’s condition was unknown. He was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.
