FRYEBURG – Bernadette Karpowick of Stow was killed when her sport utility vehicle overturned on the Haley Town Road in Fryeburg about 8 p.m. Wednesday, state police said.
The 41-year-old woman was thrown from her 1999 Chevrolet, which had gone off the road, striking a parked car, before rolling over in the road, Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said. Karpowick was pronounced dead on the scene.
Maine State Police troopers say alcohol was a factor in the accident. They were assisted by officers from the Fryeburg Police Department.
Stow is a small town north of Fryeburg on the New Hampshire border.
Ninety-nine people have been killed on Maine’s roads this year, according to the chief of the state police, Col. Craig Poulin.
Last year at this time, there had been 136 deaths on roads in Maine.
“August is one of the deadliest months on Maine roads,” Poulin said. “Drivers need to be extra cautious to ensure their and their passengers’ safety.”
