Delays expected from runway work
BOSTON (AP) – Ongoing repairs to the runways at Logan International Airport will continue to cause flight delays, but the answer to when they will occur is blowing in the wind.
The first shutdown – part of a $7.5 million repaving project – began Monday evening and lasted 58 hours because prevailing winds shifted to the northwest, leaving just two operable runways.
The situation led to an estimated 205 flight delays, some lasting a half-hour or longer, according to a spokesman for the Massachusetts Port Authority, which runs Logan.

Whale experts studying the right whale in the Bay of Fundy this summer said that while there are more calves than usual, too many of the slow-moving leviathans are being killed in ship collisions.
Lifeguard cites Web site in firing
HAMPTON, N.H. (AP) – A lifeguard says he was fired for refusing the state’s request to take down his Web site about safety tips at Hampton Beach, but a state official disputes that.
Dan Ryan, a lifeguard in Hampton for 10 years, said Thursday he was ordered to take his site down by Aug. 12, and that he complied, anticipating a meeting with state officials to discuss the problem. On Monday, when no meeting was scheduled, Ryan put the site back up, then reportedly was fired.
