In order to put spin on the ball there are a few factors that need to be in place. The first is the lie. You need to have a good lie with the ball sitting well. The second factor is the club in your hand. A short iron (a lob wedge, sand wedge or pitching wedge) works best. Balls with softer covers have a better chance at spinning, and you need to make solid contact with the shot. You also need a receptive green that is relatively soft. Without these conditions, spin is not likely on a golf shot.
