Maine needs to join with the other 30 states that have a limit on state spending and reducing taxes. A taxpayer bill of rights would accomplish that.

A common sense approach to government spending tied to population growth and the rate of inflation, TABOR would require voters’ approval and a two-thirds majority vote in the Legislature to carry out any increase in taxes and fees.

Maine carries the second highest tax burden in the country, including the highest property tax. The taxpayers of Maine can see through the smoke-and-mirror game coming from Augusta. They feel it in their wallets when payday comes and watch it spread like cancer in increased fees and a broadening of the tax base.

TABOR, added to the Maine constitution, would establish a fiscal architecture with guardrails over the state budget, ending this tax-and-spend mentality at the capitol.

TABOR petitions are being circulated throughout the state, from transfer stations to fairs and festivals. I encourage people to sign the petition and return Maine to the people.
