PHILLIPS – The only new policy in SAD 58 that will have significant impact will affect middle school students, according to Superintendent Quenten Clark.

A “pay to play” policy that has been in place at the high school is being extended to middle school students, he said Friday. Students who owe money to their schools for lunches, books or other items will be required to pay up before they will be permitted to participate in any extracurricular activities including sports and dances. It has worked well in the high school, Clark said.

Clark hopes a new addition to Stratton Elementary School will be completed by the end of the school year. The addition will house five new classrooms, including one special education room, to replace portables.

Baseball and softball players in the district will have new fields, if all goes as planned. Dave Crandall, principal of Phillips Elementary School, has been working hard on a girls softball field there. And logging contractor Bob Thorndike of Avon is helping to build what Thorndike said will be “the best baseball field in the league” at Mt. Abram High School, according to Clark.

“I’m always looking forward to the start of school,” Clark said Friday. “It gets less lonely.”

“I want to see a year where the kids have good learning experiences,” he added.
