I write in strong opposition to Almon F. Jordan III’s letter (Aug. 5) criticizing Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist for supporting an expansion of our nation’s stem cell research policy.

Jordan criticizes Frist’s motives, but the senator explained his position carefully. He is a scientist and a physician, and he shares the view of the broad scientific community that stem cell research could lead to a new era in medicine. Frist is pro-life, but he recognizes that it makes sense to use excess embryos created during fertility treatments for science when these embryos are already slated for destruction.

Fortunately in Maine, our congressional delegation has been supportive of stem cell research. I thank Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins for supporting H.R. 810, the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act, without amendments or alternatives that could delay this vital research even further.
