AUBURN – QuickBooks and Small Business Institute classes will be offered at Central Maine Community College this fall.

The Corporate and Community Services Department will offer Introduction to QuickBooks (CCS 059-21) from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays from Sept. 12 through Oct. 17. The cost is $195 and includes materials.

QuickBooks is the one of the most popular small-business computer accounting packages available. Participants will learn how to set up an accounting system for a company, manage accounts payable and accounts receivable, create invoices, bill customers, print checks, and create financial statements. Participants should have a basic understanding of Windows. The class will be taught by Ken O’Brien. O’Brien owns a computer consulting company in Woolwich and specializes in QuickBooks, Microsoft Office and Web Design.

Workshops preview

The Small Business Institute at Central Maine Community College will offer its fall schedule of workshops beginning with a free preview of the entire series and an overview of what every start-up business owner should know from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, at the college. This SBI series is especially helpful to people wishing to start their own business.

Six additional workshops will be held on Tuesdays beginning Sept. 27 and going through Nov. 1, from 9 to 11a.m. Topics will include Understanding Tax and Legal Structure (SBI 001-01); Managing Cash Flow (SBI 005-01); Effective Marketing Strategies (SBI 018-01); Financing Your Small Business (SBI 004-01); Managing Your Small Business (SBI 028-01) and Writing a Business Plan (SBI 021-01). Sessions may be taken individually for a cost of $25 each or as a package $99.

The SBI workshops will be presented by Van Perry and Bob Kasputes. Perry is regional vice president for Northeast Bank, responsible for commercial loan development in Lewiston and Auburn. He has been in the commercial lending field for over 16 years with prior positions at FAME, Farm Credit of Maine and Key Bank.

Kasputes is business counselor and center director for the Maine SBDC Service Center at Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments in Lewiston and Auburn. His area of expertise includes forecasting, capital assets purchasing, improving operational efficiency, negotiation and working with government and regulatory agencies.

He has managed accounting and operations for an $8 million grain storage, fertilizer and feed operation in Minnesota and founded Birdwatcher and Gardner Inc., a specialty retail business in Freeport.
