CAMDEN – Wooden masts stacked up like the early 1900s will grace Camden Harbor again during Labor Day weekend (Sept. 2, 3 and 4) at the 11th annual Windjammer Weekend. A fleet of more than 14 windjammers will gather for this celebration of the ships’ history.
The event will start Friday, Sept. 2, with a parade of sails into Camden Harbor at high tide, around noon.
Following the sail-in, crews and passengers from each boat will gather at Camden Harbor Park for the Schooner Bum Talent Show. A fireworks show is slated for dark.
Saturday, Sept. 3, the day will begin with the blessing of the fleet followed by a brass band send-off at the Public Landing. Then there will be lobster crate races, a build a boat contest and a nautical treasure hunt, as well as a chowder challenge, in which local restaurants submit their chowders. Other notable events include the Harbor Hounds Dog Show, The Thirsty Wailer’s Reunion, open house tours aboard participating schooners, nautical workshops and crafts, including a knot-tying demonstration by a former assistant harbor master, Capt. George Orestes.
Sunday, Sept. 4, will start with model boat races and demonstrations, nautical workshops and crafts from noon to 5, including a sneak preview of the Sunday night concert at 2 p.m. Other features will be open house tours aboard participating schooners, a schooner galley crew pie-baking contest 1 p.m. and build-a-boat judging beginning at 3 p.m.
An inner-harbor boat parade will start at 4 p.m. The Harbor Park concert will start at 6:30 p.m. with Chris Brinn and Mike Tatro, step dancer Bob McCormick and The Jolly Rogues.
