LEWISTON – Registration is open for the September Brownfields Initiative for Local Development job training program. This is a free training opportunity for unemployed, underemployed and dislocated workers.
It will teach environmental remediation and construction skills, and offer participants certifications and licenses that local employers need. Brownfields are properties that are unusable or unmarketable because of the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant or contaminant. Participants who successfully complete this training are able to work on these sites at any stage – from cleanup to redevelopment – and earn a livable wage. The average wage of brownfields’ job training graduates is $12.95 an hour and, with these skills and certifications, a graduate has the potential to advance and build a career in environmental and construction industries.
Participants can choose a part-time class schedule (evenings and Saturdays) beginning Sept. 1 and continuing for six months, or the fast track (full-time day classes) beginning in January and continuing for two months. In either case, interested people should call the Lewiston CareerCenter at (207) 753-9001 as soon as possible.
