MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) – A Derry man will spend the next 40 weekends in jail for using the Internet to solicit sex with an underage girl.
Construction worker Joseph Gomes, pleaded guilty on Monday in Hillsborough County Superior Court. He was sentenced to 180 days in jail, with credit for good behavior. He asked to serve the time during weekends because his wife is pregnant.
According to authorities, Gomes set up two meetings with his online sex partner, whom he believed was a 14-year-old girl. Gomes missed the first meeting, but showed up for a second try in November, 2003. That’s when he found out his online girlfriend actually was undercover Hollis Det. Richard Mello.
As part of his sentence, Gomes must register as a sex offender, and can’t have unsupervised contact with children.
