LEWISTON – The Lewiston Lodge of Elks 371 held its annual Richard Gibson Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament at the Fox Ridge Golf Club in Auburn this summer. The scramble format tournament attracted 64 golfers from across the area in an effort to raise money to benefit the scholarship fund.

Tournament Chairman J.R. Levasseur reported that the winning team consisted of Ray Bennett, Lennie Lajoie, Roy Touchette and Shaw Arsenault, who came in at 15 under par.

A total of $12,000 has been awarded to students from across the area. Those receiving scholarships were Adam Wilding, Lewiston High School; Alexandra Turgeon, St. Dominic Regional High School; Troy Janell, Oak Hill High School; John Daggett Jr., Oak Hill High School; Abby Bosse, Lewiston High School; Stephanie DeFilipp, Edward Little High School; as well as the Maineiacs Scholarship Foundation.

The late Richard Gibson was involved in athletics and believed in a good education. Gibson graduated from Holy Cross College where he played football and was considered one of the top punters in the nation. He also served in the navy during World War II and taught social studies and history at St. Dominic High School, where he also coached football and baseball.

Gibson also taught at Lewiston High School and served that school as a guidance counselor and assistant football coach. He retired as assistant principal of that school. He was also a member of the Lewiston Lodge of Elks, which began the fund in his memory.

To qualify for the scholarship, students must have strong academic qualities, participate in athletics and demonstrate financial need. Applications are available through the lodge. For more information on the scholarship, contact the Elks at 784-4801.
