ALS walk
PORTLAND – The Northern New England Chapter of the ALS Association announces its annual Walk to D’Feet ALS on Saturday, Sept. 10, at Back Cove.
Registration will open at 10:30 a.m. and the walk will begin at noon. The three-and-a-half-mile walk is open to the public, and all funds raised will be donated to the ALS Association, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to finding the cause and cure of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and to assisting patients and their families.

Elks scholarships
LEWISTON – Applications are available for high school seniors who want to contend for the title of Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student and for a scholarship of up to $60,000. The male and female first-place winners each receive $60,000 scholarships; second and third place receive $40,000 and $20,000, respectively; and the 494 runners-up receive $4,000 scholarships.
Applicants do not need to be related to a member of the Elks, but must be United States citizens. Males and females compete separately and are judged based on scholarship, leadership and financial need.
Applications are available online at www.elks.org/enf/scholars; by sending a self addressed, stamped envelope to the Elks National Foundation; or by visiting a local Elks lodge. Students must submit applications to their local Elks lodge by Jan. 13.
Cancer workshops
SOUTH PORTLAND – People living with cancer are facing one of the hardest challenges they may ever encounter. To meet the challenge, the American Cancer Society and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society have partnered with the Cancer Community Center to offer a series of educational workshops for cancer patients.
“Cancer: Keys for Survivorship – Working with Your Healthcare Team to Meet Your Needs,” the first in the series, will be offered at the Cancer Community Center, 778 Main St., from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15. A panel of experts, including a doctor, social worker and nurse, will discuss the most effective tools for working with a cancer treatment team in order to manage cancer treatment and survivorship.

Cancer walk
BRUNSWICK – The public is invited to join the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks on Sunday, Oct. 16, in Brunswick, Damariscotta and Portland. Funds raised from the non-competitive walk support the society’s breast cancer research, education and patient service programs.

Pro-life speaker
AUGUSTA – Ray Flynn, former ambassador to the Vatican, mayor of Boston and nationally known pro-life advocate, will be the guest speaker at the Pro Life Education Association’s annual recognition luncheon at noon Saturday, Sept. 17, at the Senator Inn. Flynn will discuss “Why People of Faith Need to be Involved in the Civic Arena.”
The luncheon is open to the public. Reservations are required and can be obtained by writing to Patricia Truman, 85 Second St., Hallowell, and enclosing a check payable to PLEA for $15 for each reservation. Reservations are first-come, first-served and must be received no later than Sept. 13.

Home workshops
BATH – Coastal Enterprises Inc., a nonprofit community development organization, will offer a four-evening Homeownership Education Course from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays, Sept. 12, 19, 26 and Oct. 3, at the Morse High School, 826 High St.
The purpose is to help people prepare for and be informed about the process of buying a home. Seminar topics will include evaluating credit, budgeting and money management, types of available mortgages and the closing process and post-closing considerations.
Participants who complete all four sessions will receive a certificate of completion that may make them eligible for special mortgage and/or closing discounts.
