AUBURN – Richard Martin will direct Community Little Theatre’s next show, “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast,” scheduled to run Oct. 6 to 16 in the Great Falls Performing Arts Center on Academy Street.
The show is still on Broadway and the local theater group is pleased to be the first community theater in Maine to present the award-winning musical, a spokesman said. Music is by Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, and book by Linda Woolverton.
The story tells of a young prince who was spoiled and selfish. One night, a beggar woman requested shelter in his castle in return for a single red rose. But he sneered at the gift and turned her woman away. She warned the prince “not to be deceived by appearances, for beauty is found within.”
When the old woman’s ugliness melted away to reveal a beautiful enchantress, the prince tried to apologize, but it was too late.
As punishment, she transformed him into a hideous beast and placed a powerful spell on the castle and its inhabitants.
The enchantress left him with only a magic mirror to see the outside world, and the enchanted rose she had offered.
The beast will be portrayed by Jayson Bray and the beauty (Belle) by Emily Flynn. Duane Glover assumes the role of Gaston, the villain who pursues Belle. Her eccentric, inventor father, Maurice, is played by Phil Vampatella. Mrs. Potts, the enchanted teapot, played by Robbi Starnegg, sings the title song.
Others in the cast are Don Libby as Lefou; Anne Caldwell as Madame Bouche; Dan Crawford, Cogsworth; Mitchell Clyde Thomas, Lumiere; Catherine Ouellette, Babette; Taylor Ouellette, Chip; and Scott Powers, D’Arque.
