FARMINGTON – Laurie Barker is the Artist for September at Heirlooms of Tomorrow, Routes 2 and 4.

A resident of New Vineyard, Barker grew up in North Andover, Mass., and witnessed the disappearance of forests and wildlife as housing developments took over the landscape. Her formative years on a dairy and vegetable farm gave her an appreciation for the outdoors and wildlife.

Barker’s work in paintings, poetry and photography captures the beauty she sees in nature. From her home in New Vineyard she combines realism with some elements of abstraction in her paintings.

“Painting is a challenge, so I choose moments of serenity and peace to focus on. I feel a spiritual connection to my subjects, if I can portray that to my viewer I feel successful,” she said.

Barker is a graduate of the University of Maine at Farmington with a bachelor’s degree in studio art and of Keene State College with an associate degree.

Her work will be introduced at an open house from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3. Refreshments will be served.
