JAY – A change of scenery was precisely what the Telstar field hockey needed as the Rebels stayed focused and got back on track in a Mountain Valley Conference game under sunny skies on Friday afternoon.
Danna Wilson and Lyndsay Hart each scored a goal and earned an assist as the Rebels utilized a total team effort in a 5-0 win against Jay.
Telstar (2-1) picked up the intensity level and it paid off nicely with three goals during a four-minute span in the first half.
The Rebels were effective at passing the ball and outhustled the youthful Tigers.
“That was a totally different team out there today,” Telstar coach Gail Wight said. “Against Livermore Falls (3-0 loss) the girls were out hustled and slow to react. In this game, they were passing to the spread instead of passing (directly) at people and the shots were aimed at the cage.”
Telstar called a timeout midway through the first half, and the team executed the strategy.
Mallory Brown opened the scoring off a Wilson feed with 11:11 remaining. Less than two minutes later, Wilson poked home a rebound. Jay goalie Brenda Allen had stopped the initial shot.
Hart one timed a shot from 12-feet out to give the Rebels an insurmountable 3-0 lead.
“There was no (chip on our shoulder) out there today,” tri-captain Liz Rosenberg said. “We just played up to our potential today. We wanted to prove to our new (assistant) coach that we’re capable of playing well.”
Jay (0-3) was unable to mount an offensive attack because of stick infractions inside the circle. Senior Ashlee Brooks (injured in second half), Katie Morin and wing Julie Nelson had the best opportunities.
Telstar goalies Stephanie Tripp and Heather Gionet combined for the shutout.
The Rebels received a strong effort by halfbacks Lauren Conroy, Rosenberg and Kelsey Dole and sweeper Jullian Kimball.
“I really couldn’t make to many adjustments,” Jay coach Jane DiPompo said. “I did put in a freshman goalie in the second, as a psychological and physical ploy, to try and slow the Telstar attack. We’re just inexperienced because we graduated eight and the underclassmen are just getting some playing time.”
Chea Davis scored on a crossing pass early in the second. Kayla Mills completed the scoring. Telstar had advantages in shots, 15-4, and on penalty corners 14-4.
