BOOMING MARKET: The number of farmers’ markets nationwide more than doubled between 1994 and 2004. The U.S. Department of Agriculture said there were just over 3,700 markets a year ago.

EATING HEALTHY: A boom in farm markets and produce stands during the last 10 years comes at a time when more people are interested in organic foods and healthy eating.

SNACKING SWEETS: To increase profits, market owners are selling fresh-baked pies, doughnuts and ice cream.
