ORONO -The University of Maine athetic department has begun construction on an air-supported dome-type structure that will serve as an indoor practice facility for Black Bear athletes. The ceremonial groundbreaking for the facility, which will include a state-of-the-art artifical surface, will be held this Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 4 pm.

UMaine alum Larry Mahaney is donating the approximately $1 million dollars required to construct the 200’x200′ dome, which should be completed later this year. Mahaney is also the namesake for the Black Bears’ baseball facility.

Maine names assistant baseball coaches

ORONO – Maine head baseball coach Steve Trimper announced Monday that Cory Domel and Jared Holowaty have been added to the Black Bears coaching staff. The Bears 2005 co-captain, Aaron Izaryk, will also join the staff as a graduate assistant coach.

Domel will serve as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Maine. He joins the Black Bears after four years at the College of Lake County, during which he compiled a 146-63 record as a head coach, assistant head coach, and pitching coach.

Holloway will assist with hitting and the infielders after serving as a graduate assistant at the College of New Jersey, where he handled duties as a recruiting coordinator, outfield coach, and sub-varsity head coach.

Cleaver named NESCAC Player of the Week

WATERVILLE – Colby senior Cait Cleaver was named the NESCAC Volleyball Player of the Week after earning all-tournament honors in the Colby Invitational tournament. The Mules went 4-0 during the tournament as Cleaver amassed 36 kills, 26 digs, and four blocks.

The senior outside hitter went over 1,200 kills in her career during the tournament (1,211).
