LEWISTON – Robert F. “Bob” Custeau, 82, of Auburn, passed away Sept. 11, at d’Youville Pavilion, with his loving family by his side after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

He was born in Auburn on Nov. 9, 1922, the eldest son of Alphonse and Aurore (Pelletier). He attended Lewiston schools and graduated from Bliss College.

He joined the Army Air Corps during World War II and was a gunner on a B-24 Liberator. He was a recipient of two Silver Stars, serving in the South Pacific. He and his family then moved to Massachusetts where they lived for 48 years and he worked as a salesman until his retirement.

He met the love of his life, Jeannette Guay, whom he married on Sept. 1, 1947, and they spent the next 58 years as one.

He loved to listen to classical music and dance, but his true love was woodworking – creating three-dimensional bridges for family and friends.

He will be sadly missed but always remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was a lifelong member of the VFW in Hudson, Mass.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years; his son, Daniel and Bebie Custeau of Illinois; two daughters, Jackie and James Dow of New Hampshire, and Joane and David Greenwood of Massachusetts; two sisters, Claire Lamore of Lewiston and Mariette Adler of Auburn; six grandchildren, Cheri Johnson, Aimee Chase, Jamie Dow, Robert and Heather Greenwood, and Michael Custeau; and two great-grandchildren, Daria and Gabrielle Johnson.

He was predeceased by three sisters, Theresa Sevit, Lucille Caron and Madeleine Fillion; and a niece, Claudette Ouellette.
