AUBURN – The Central Maine Community College Athletic Department presents the annual New England Basketball Showcase for high school girls and boys on Saturday, Oct. 8 and Sunday, Oct. 9, in the Kirk Hall gymnasium. The boys’ showcase starts at noon Saturday, with the girls scheduled for the same time Sunday.

The showcase is an opportunity for players to showcase their ability in front of numerous high school and college coaches from New England. CMCC athletic director and showcase spokesman Dave Gonyea said that every college coach in New England will be invited to the one-stop combine.

CMCC is accepting only 80 participants. Teams will be broken up into groups of seven to 10 players, with each student playing half of each game.

The New England Showcase coincides with CMCC’s coaches’ workshops on the same weekend. Coaches from the University of Maine, Bryant, Johnon State, Williams, Southern Maine CC and Southern New Hampshire already have committed to attend.

Maranacook youth hockey registration

KENTS HILL – The Maranacook Area Youth Hockey Association will hold registration for the 2005-06 hockey season this Saturday, Sept. 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Alfond Center. There also will be a two-hour open skate beginning at noon.

Middle School preseason hoop league scheduled

NORTH ANSON – Carrabec High School is hosting a preseason basketball league for girls’ and boys’ teams in grades six, seven and eight.

The league will play Sundays from Sept. 18 through Oct. 30, with each team playing two games per week. Games will be two 20-minute halves, running time except for the final two minutes. There will be two officials at each contest.

Lake Region scramble

NAPLES – Lake Region High School will hold a scramble tournament at Naples Golf & Country Club, Route 114, on Sunday, Sept. 25 at noon. The event will benefit Project Graduation 2006.

Volleyball skills clinics

LEWISTON – Members of the Co-Ed Volleyball A League will conduct volleyball skills clinics on Wednesdays from 6:15 to 7;15 p.m. and Thursdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the gym at the Multi-Purpose Center. Anyone who will be participating in any Lewiston Recreation Department Co-Ed Volleyball League this year may participate.

Punt, Pass & Kick

RUMFORD – The Rumford Parks and Rumford Lodge of Elks No. 862 will host an NFL Pepsi Punt, Pass & Kick competition this Sunday, Sept. 18. The competition is free and open to boys and girls ages 8 to 15.

It will be held at Hosmer Field at 9 a.m. for the 8-to-11 group, followed at 10 a.m. by the 12-and-up group. Registration begins 30 minutes before each competition. Each participant must have a registration form signed by a parent or legal guardian, as well as a valid birth certificate. Entry forms will be available the day of competition.

The top finishers in each of the eight age groups at local competition advance to sectional competition. Many NFL players competed in Punt, Pass & Kick as youths, including Dan Marino and Drew Bledsoe.

Softball tourney

AUBURN – BT Pallet is holding a softball tournament Saturday, Sept. 17 to raise funds for a trip to the Triple Crown Sports National Tournament in Florida. This will be a one-pitch tournament with a three home run limit. Entry free is $125 with a Thursday night deadline. Please call 212-7424 for more information or to enter.

University of Maine clinics this Saturday

ORONO – New University of Maine baseball coach Steve Trimper and softball coach Stacey Sullivan will host youth clinics prior to Saturday’s home football game against Richmond. The clinics are scheduled for 4 p.m., with kickoff at 6 o’clock.

The clinic is designed for students in grades six through eight at a cost of $8 per participant. For that fee, each child will receive a Black Bears t-shirt as well as a ticket to the football game.
