It is open to Durham residents only; identification will be required.

Items not accepted are: propane tanks, household trash, batteries, car and truck parts, construction or demolition debris, brush, recyclables, fluorescent tubes, hazardous waste, liquid waste; tractor-trailer, dump truck or heavy equipment tires; and business waste.

Acceptable items are: appliances such as stoves, ranges, televisions, computer screens and microwaves; furniture, (metal frames of beds and couches must be removed); mattresses, box springs; rugs and carpeting cut in 3- by 3-foot squares or smaller; large metal items, scrap metal (no car or truck parts); large plastic items such as toys; and tanks for flammable liquids (must be cut in half).

Appliances such as freezers, refrigerators and air conditioners must be red-tagged, indicating that the freon has been removed by a professional prior to delivery to the collection site.

People may phone the town office at 353-2561, ext. 4, to find out which items are accepted free and which will require a fee. Some of the acceptable items require a fee that must be paid in advance at the Town Office.

Passenger vehicle tires will be accepted for a charge of $2 per tire. Prepayment is required at the Town Office before 4:30 p.m. Friday.

To facilitate off-loading, light and small loads will be given priority over heavier or large loads.

The Eureka Community Center Committee has made arrangements to pick up items at the homes of those who don’t have a way to bring them to the bulky waste cleanup site or are physically unable to do so.

Pickup service will benefit the Eureka Community Center’s Building Renovation Fund. For a minimum $25 donation per truck load, committee members will pick up your household items and deliver them to the trash drop-off location. If interested, people can call Anita Sellers at 353-6217 several days in advance. Items must fit in the back of a pickup truck and be of reasonable weight.
