MONMOUTH – The Maine Country Music Association will put on a Country Music Weekend tonight, tomorrow and Sunday at Beaver Brook Campground. Proceeds will go toward the MCMA Hall of Fame fund.
The association is looking for land or land and buildings to develop a Maine Country Music Hall of Fame. There are presently 58 inductees in the Hall of Fame and memorabilia generated over the years from these performers is now in storage. The goal is to one day be able to display all these artifacts in a building, open to the public, with an auditorium for staging shows and enough land for a parking lot.
Some MCMA Hall of Fame members are Dick Curiess, Hal Lone Pine, Ken Mackenzie, Yodelin’ Slim Clark, Jud Strunk, Russ Adams, Curly O’Brien, Ginger Mae Dyer, Bob Elston, Timmy Farrell, Norm DeCoteau, Fred “Tommy” Thompson and Slim Andrews.
Music will begin at 7 p.m. Friday and run until 10 p.m. Saturday’s events will kick off with a Chinese auction from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Music will start at 11 a.m. and run through until 9 p.m., followed by a dance until 11 p.m. There will be two breaks during the day for lunch and supper. MCMA will provide a baked bean supper with hot dogs, coleslaw and biscuits.
Among the musicians tentatively scheduled to perform are Slim Andrews and the Cumberland Valley Boys, Chris Fyfe, Barry Wood, Bobby Rousseau, the Crosbys, Dick Secord, Bill Mills & Shirley Marie Kenney, Russ Adams, Tade Mahoney, Everard Dodge and Roseanna Rogers, Brenda Millet & Band and Elizabeth and the County Drifters.
Sunday there will be a pancake breakfast at 8 a.m. and a gospel hour from 9 to 10 a.m., with regular music continuing as long as people remain to listen.
The weekend is open for campers and the general public. A daily fee will be charged to the general public wanting to attend either Friday, Saturday or Sunday’s programs. For information on Beaver Brook camping, contact 923-2108. For program info, contact 645-2472.
