PARIS – A Rumford man who pleaded guilty to hitting his infant child in the face in April is to report to jail Sept. 26.
On Monday, Oxford County Superior Court Justice Ellen Gorman sentenced William H. Babbidge, 26, to two years in Oxford County Jail, with all but 30 days suspended. The sentence was stayed until 9 a.m. Monday, Sept. 26.
Babbidge also received two years’ probation and was ordered to complete counseling for anger management and impulse control.
Additionally, Gorman said he is to have no contact with his 8-week-old daughter without first getting written permission from his probation officer.
Babbidge was arrested and charged with felony assault by Rumford police on April 14 after an investigation sparked by a Rumford Hospital doctor who had examined the child the day before and reported possible child abuse, said Detective Lt. Stacy Carter on Thursday.
Babbidge “admitted to me that he slapped the child three or four times,” Carter said.
