SOUTH PARIS – George E. Wheeler, 89, of Bryant Pond, died at the Maine Veterans Home in South Paris on Sept. 15.

He was born in Gilead on Nov. 18, 1915, the son of Herbert and Mae (Maker) Wheeler. He was educated in Dixfield schools and graduated from Dixfield High School, where he played football and hockey.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served from 1942 to 1946, was a member of the VFW and worked at Stowell Wood Products for many years. He was an avid hunter and trapper, and a baseball fan.

He is survived by a nephew, Raymond Charest and his wife, Nancy, of Wilton; a niece, Corleen Brown of Norfolk, Va.; and a special friend, Daniel J. LePage of South Paris.

He was predeceased by a brother, Howard Wheeler; and a sister, Rita Charest.
