NORTH YARMOUTH – The Rev. Gladys Doughty York, 94, died peacefully Sept. 13, having lived a full life of service to churches and people, touching countless lives in Maine.

She was born on May 30, 1911, the daughter of Wilbert H. Doughty and Nellie Mae Alexander. Graduating from high school in Fall River, she went on to earn a B.A. degree from Tufts College in 1932 and a B.D. degree from Andover Newton Theological School in 1935 – the only woman in the graduating class.

Over the years, she was honored for her many accomplishments. In June 1985, she was given a surprise celebration for her Golden Jubilee. In 1985, she was installed as pastor emeritus in the North Yarmouth Congregational Church and was the first recipient of the Distinguished Minister Award from Andover Newton Theological School.

In 2000, she was recognized as one of the “pioneers” in women’s ministry in a celebration in St. Luke’s, and was to have been awarded a plaque next week for 70 years of active ministry in the U.C.C. in Maine.

She enjoyed a birthday celebration at the North Yarmouth Church this past June, and looked forward to December when she would have been installed as pastor emeritus of the East Windham Community Church.

She is survived by her daughter, Ruth of New Gloucester; two grandsons, Gregory Nadeau of Manchester, N.H., and Christopher Nadeau of Goffstown, N.H.; and her brother, Wilbert Doughty of Florida.
