Rally for the troops

AUGUSTA – A rally to support the troops will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at Buker School.

Those participating are asked to bring signs of support, photos of soldiers and messages to send overseas.

There will be a bake sale, raffle, coffee, doughnuts, hot dogs, sodas and chips. Half the proceeds will be donated to hurricane relief.

College fair

GORHAM – USM’s Costello Sports Complex on the Gorham campus will be filled with high school students and their families as the students search for colleges at the annual New England Association of College Admission Officers College Fair from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25.

The free event, intended for students interested in attending college, their families and guidance/college counselors, offers the opportunity to speak with admissions officers from more than 200 institutions.

Charter schools

AUGUSTA – The Maine Association for Charter Schools will host a dinner for public charter school supporters in Maine to meet several charter school experts from other states on Thursday, Oct. 6. The dinner will be at the St. Paul Center, 136 State St., from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The cost is $20 a person, and reservations made be made by contacting MACS at 763-3576, or macs@mainecharterschools.org.

Arboretum

AUGUSTA – Teachers, homeschoolers and Scout leaders are invited to plan a field trip this fall to the Pine Tree State Arboretum, 153 Hospital St.

The arboretum is on 224 acres and includes a pond, wetland and forest, five miles of trails through woods and open fields and two dozen plant and tree collections.

Outdoor education programs are available weekday mornings during September and October. Programs are conducted in small groups by staff and volunteers and last up to one and a half hours. Groups must provide one chaperone for every six students.

The cost is $3 a child with a $40 group minimum. Groups are welcome to stay for a picnic lunch or a teacher-led activity. Self-guided tours are also possible.

Women’s program

BRUNSWICK – Parkview Adventist Medical Center will hold the hospital’s first annual women’s health conference, “Health, Harmony and Wellness: A Conference for Women,” from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, at Bowdoin College.

Presentations will include weight control, organic living, natural remedies, healthy cooking and menopause. Speakers will includes Dr. Dora Mills, director of the Maine Bureau of Health.

There will be a lunchtime fashion show and throughout the day participants can browse over 30 local health and wellness vendor booths.
