BETHEL – Charlene Marie Haines, 65, passed peacefully away in her sleep after a long fight against heart and kidney disease. She is at peace now.

She was born on Aug. 15, 1940, to Eunice and Orin W. Sprague of Woodstock, where she attended school. She was the next-to-youngest of nine children.

She loved working and staying busy. When she wasn’t working as a stay-at-home mom, she was working in various woodworking mills in the Bethel area. She filled her free time with picking berries, cooking, making jelly, reading, watching her “stories,” listening to country music and watching her beloved Red Sox. She loved playing cards with “the girls” and being with her family, friends and pets. All who were touched by her gentleness, strength, sense of humor and giving spirit will miss her.

She was a past member of the Locke Mills Legion Auxiliary, a lifetime member of the Greenwood and Bethel historical societies and a member of the Alder River Grange, where many enjoyed her homemade rolls. When she could, she attended the Bethel Alliance Church where she had recently been baptized.

She was married for 28 years to George K. Haines, and they made their home in the East Bethel community.

Her passing left a hole in the hearts of her four daughters, Brenda Marshall and her fianc, Dave Rose, of Bryant Pond, Karen Hughes of Harrison, Joyce Marshall of Bryant Pond, and Lisa Haines of Bethel; her son, James Haines and his partner, Darren Goyette, of Gray; six grandsons, Joseph Marshall and his partner, Amanda Waterhouse, Thomas Hughes, Jeffrey Currier, Jeremy Mack, Kenny Marshall and Brandon Worthley; one granddaughter, Starr Bonney and her partner, David Buck; one great-granddaughter, Dawn Marie Buck; her four sisters, Edith Bellegarde, Evelyn Pike, Daisy Coolidge and Anita Mason; a brother, George Sprague; half sister, Helen Brown; a sister-in-law, Nancy Mercer; two brothers-in-law, John Haines and Peter Haines; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends who gave Charlene so much joy.

Her beloved son, John A. Marshall IV, predeceased her, as well as her parents; a brother, Orin “Billy” Sprague; and two sisters, Doris Walker and Mabel Fournier.
