BETHEL – The Sun Journal garnered a total of 43 awards in the Maine Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest.

The winners were announced Saturday at the annual banquet at the Grand Summit Resort Hotel and Conference Center at Sunday River.

The Sun Journal’s Sunday newspaper was named Newspaper of the Year in the weekend division for the third time in five years. The Maine Sunday Telegram finished second and the Bangor Daily News was third.

The Sun Journal took second place in the daily Newspaper of the Year category. The Press Herald placed won that category, while the Bangor Daily News placed third.

The Sun Journal’s two-day series examining the competition for Navy ship contracts between Bath Iron Works and a Mississippi shipyard received a first place award in the editorial analysis category.

Reporter Carol Coultas and photographer Ashleigh Starke traveled to Pascagoula, Miss., to examine the potential loss of a Navy destroyer contract at a shipyard similar to BIW.

A staffwide project examining speeding on Maine roads received a third-place award.
