SALEM, Mass – Junior defender Denise Minigell and Samantha Johnson each converted their penalty shootout strokes to lead University of Southern Maine to a 2-1 victory over Salem State.
The Huskies took a 1-0 lead when senior forward Kayla Vaughan scored unassisted. Salem State’s Kara Beauregard scored the equalizer in the 56th minute. Salem State goalie Christina Ferriara made eight of her 15 saves in overtime.
Bowdoin 3, Colby 1
BRUNSWICK – Burgess LePage scored at the 28:44 mark of the first half as Bowdoin defeated Colby 3-1.
Allyson Craib and Hillary Hoffman scored a goal apiece for the Polar Bears. Goalkeeper Kate Leonard made five saves for Bowdoin.
Kyla Wegman scored the lone goal for Colby at the 2:07 mark.
Amherst 2, Bates 1
LEWISTON – Rachel Carr-Harris scored the game-winning goal with 24:31 remaining in the second half to hand Amherst a 2-1 win over Bates in college field hockey action Saturday.
Rachel Greenwood scored with 14:20 remaining in the second half off a Lindsey Ferguson assist to bring the Bobcats (0-2) to within one, but the team could not add another goal despite outshooting Amherst 10-2 in the half and adding four penalty kicks.
Erin O’Hare scored the lone goal of the first half for the Lord Jeffs (3-0).
Mens’ soccer
Bowdoin 2, Colby 1
BRUNSWICK – Andrew Russo found the back of the net on a free kick from 20 yards out for the game-winning goal in double overtime to give Bowdoin a 2-1 victory over Colby in a mens’s soccer match up on Saturday.
Wolf Grueber started the scoring for Bowdoin at the 14:44 mark in the first half.
Colby’s Will Kinder scored the game-tying goal in the second half on a pass from Bobby Abendroth.
Bates, Amherst tie
LEWISTON – Bates College battled to a hard fought 1-1 tie against Amerst College.
The Lord Jeffs scored first when Joseph Gannon drove a rebound into the lower left corner of the goal.
The Bobcats (0-1-1) responded with 23 minutes remaining as sophomore Duane Pelz took a feed from teammate Brent Morin and lofted it over the Amherst goalie William Lockwood.
Womens’ soccer
Bowdoin 3, Colby 2
BRUNSWICK – Katherine Whitley scored two goals to carry Bowdoin to a 3-2 win over Colby.
Kelsey Wilcox scored a goal and Ann Zeigler had two assists for the Polar Bears (3-0). Goaltender Anna Shapell had nine saves for the Polar Bears.
Colby received goals from Laura Williamson and Kara McCabe.
UMF 2, Johnson 1
FARMINGTON – Jodie Welch scored a goal and an assist, including the game-winner, to lift the University of Maine-Farmington past Johnson State, 2-1.
The Beavers (2-1) scored the game’s first two goals, one in each half. Kelsey Burk put the Beavers on the board early in the first half on an assist from Welch. Welch then scored the game-winner midway through the second half on an assist from Erin Campbell.
Amherst 3, Bates 2
LEWISTON – Heather Nowak tapped in the game-winner in the 72nd minute as Amherst went on to defeat Bates 3-2.
Stephanie Yesnick opened the scoring for the Lord Jeffs (2-0). Meg Coffin headed home Molly Wagner’s corner kick to even up the score for the Bobcats (1-1).
Amherst recaptured the lead eight minutes later as Amy Armstrong scored off an assist from Nowak.
Armstrong returned the favor by feeding Nowak for the game-winner.
Wagner capped the scoring in the 75th minute for the Bobcats, scoring off a direct kick.
Football
Maine Maritime 28, Curry 21
CASTINE – Don Thibodeau’s second touchdown of the game, a 1-yard dive with three seconds to play, gave Maine Maritime a 28-21 win over Curry on Saturday.
Thibodeau, who also scored on a 38-yard run in the first quarter, finished with 249 yards rushing on 27 carries. Brandon Goodrich ran for 42 yards and two touchdowns for Maine Maritime (2-0).
Brandon Benoit had 138 yards rushing and a touchdown to lead Curry (1-2).
