LEWISTON – Terence O’Connell netted three goals and Brent Morin added a pair as Bates College defeated St. Joseph’s 6-0 in men’s soccer action on Sunday.

Atdhe Matoshi also scored. The Bobcats outshot the Monks 38-1 and were awarded 16 corner kicks.

Husson 2, Becker 1

BANGOR – Oscar Ody blasted home the game-winning goal with just under 20 minutes to play to lift Husson to a 2-1 win over Becker in a men’s soccer match on Sunday.

Pat St. Hilaire fed Ody a pass along the left wing, and Ody deposited the shot on the short side. Eric Melo added a goal for the Eagles (5-3 overall, 2-0 in the NAC). Shane Coffin scored for Becker (2-3-2, 0-2). Chris Jackson made three saves to garner the victory in net, while Chris Kirwan stopped six shots.

Maine 4, Manhattan 1

ORONO – Adam Chenault ignited a three-goal second half as Maine defeated Manhattan 4-1 in a men’s soccer match on Sunday.

Ben Wilcox scored twice and Kevin Forgett added a single tally for the Black Bears (2-4). Jason Jacobe tacked on a pair of assists. Justin Schultz netted the lone goal for the Jaspers (0-6). Chad Mongeon registered five saves in the Maine goal while David Mires made three.

CMCC 4, NMCC 3

PRESQUE ISLE – John Wigandt scored two of his three goals in a wild first half to help Central Maine Community College pick up a 4-3 victory over Northern Maine Community College in men’s soccer on Sunday.

The Mustangs (3-1) led 3-2 at the break and led the rest of the way. Alvan Karamez added a goal and an assist in the win. Josh Gonstoroski led the Falcons (0-3) with a pair of tallies while Jamie Abar chipped in with a single score. Matt Latham racked up 22 saves in the win while Justin Lyshon made 14 saves in a losing cause.

RIC 1, USM 0

GORHAM – Senior forward Kyle Teixeira scored the only goal of the match in the eighth minute of play to give Rhode Island College a 1-0 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference men’s soccer match on Sunday.

The win lifts the Anchormen to a 2-3-0 overall record. Southern Maine, winless in its last four matches, falls to 1-3-1 overall.

A foul outside the penalty area gave the Anchormen a direct kick opportunity from about 25 yards out. Teixeira hit a curving ball into the upper corner of the net for his sixth goal of the season.

Castleton 2, UMF 0

FARMINGTON – The University of Maine at Farmington men’s soccer team was defeated by Castleton State College 2-0 on Sunday.

The evenly matched teams battled to a Castleton 1-0 advantage after the first half, with Castleton holding the shooting advantage 8-4. UMF rallied in the second, forcing more corner kicks (3), but Castleton added another goal in to secure the win.

UMF stands at 1-2-1 overall and 0-2 in the NAC.

Johnson State 3, Thomas 2

WATERVILLE – The Johnson State College men’s soccer team (3-3-0) scored with 14 seconds left in overtime to defeat Thomas College (0-3-1) 3-2 Sunday at Alumni Field.

Devin Corey scored twice, including the game-winning goal in overtime, to lead Johnson State. Goalie Ryan Conrad kept the game close with 18 saves for Thomas.

Tyler Simpson got the scoring started with an unassisted goal early in the first half to give Thomas the lead. Johnson State quickly answered with goals by Devin Corey and Sam Johnson to give them a 2-1 lead. Ryan Buttice scored early in the second half to tie the game for Thomas 2-2.

Women’s soccer

USM 4, RIC 1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Liz Brunton scored a goal and earned two assists to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 4-1 victory over Rhode Island College on Sunday afternoon in a Little East Conference women’s soccer match.

The Huskies got off to a fast start scoring three times in the first 16:25. Senior Devin Edwards of South Paris gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead at 1:19 off assists from junior Julia Cyr and senior Dianna Thibaudeau. Cyr delivered a corner kick into the box where Thibaudeau headed the ball back across the goal to Edwards who knock it home.

Castleton 2, UMF 1

FARMINGTON – Castleton State College scored a pair of goals, defeating the University of Maine at Farmington, 2-1, in women’s soccer on Sunday.

The teams played through a scoreless first half with the Beavers in control, taking nine shots to Castleton’s one. But it was Castleton who broke the barrier first in the second period.

Minutes later UMF’s Jodie Welch answered for the Beavers when she connected on a pass from Amanda Byrne. Castleton gained the advantage a few minutes later in what turned out to be the game-winner. UMF stands at 1-1 in the NAC and 2-2 overall.

Thomas 1, Johnson State 0

WATERVILLE – The Thomas College women’s soccer team (2-3-0) earned its second victory of the season with a 1-0 shutout of conference opponent Johnson State College (2-4-0) on Sunday at Alumni Field.

Ashley Martin scored the lone goal for Thomas and goalie Jessie Craft had 12 saves.

Martin scored at 20:55 of the first half on a scramble in front of the net. That would prove to be the only offense Thomas needed as both defenses tightened up and no other goals were allowed.

Thomas improves to 1-1 in the conference.

Maine 3, Marist 0

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Heather Hathorn scored two twice and Maureen McHugh picked up a single tally to lead Maine to a 3-0 win over Marist in women’s soccer action on Sunday.

Jasmine Phillips only needed to make one save to secure the shutout for the Black Bears (5-3). Marist falls to 1-6.

Husson 5, Becker 0

BANGOR – Danielle Billings, Laurie Melen and Elissa Gordon each registered a goal and an assist as Husson College shut out Becker 5-0 in women’s soccer on Sunday.

Shelby Morissette and Tatyana Wolterbeek also scored for the Eagles. Husson (4-3 overall, 2-0 in the NAC) outshot Becker (2-4-1, 0-2) 23-1 in the one-sided match. Leah Drew picked up the shutout in goal while Danielle Caron stopped 18 shots in a losing cause.

Field hockey

Maine 2, Massachusetts 1

ORONO – Kim MacDonald banged home a loose ball in front to give Maine a 2-1 triumph over Massachusetts in field hockey on Sunday.

Lauren Gillespie staked the Minutemen (3-5) to an early lead only to have Shaunessy Saucier tie the match later in the first half. Maygan Cassarino and Becca Giroux combined to make seven saves for the Black Bears (5-3). Becky Letourneau turned aside five shots for the Minutemen.
