NEW SHARON – A St. Albans man was seriously injured early Monday night when his truck collided with a horse trailer on Route 2.

Eugene Sheridan, 47, was taken to a Lewiston hospital by helicopter after his car struck the trailer about 5:45 p.m. and then slammed into a tree.

Two horses inside the trailer and the man hauling them on Route 2 both escaped injury in the wreck that closed the road.

Maine State Police said Sheridan was driving west when his Ford pickup truck drifted across the center line. Driving in the opposite direction, Harvey Hanington, 66, of Danforth, was able to swerve out of the way of Sheridan’s oncoming truck, according to Trooper Matt Casazant.

Sheridan’s truck missed Hanington’s pickup but struck the horse trailer behind it, Casazant said. The collision caused both trucks to spin out of control.

Police said Hanington’s Dodge Ram ended up in a ditch beside the road. Sheridan’s truck struck a tree nearby. He was taken to Central Maine Medical Center where he was being treated late Monday night.

Casazant spoke with hospital officials and said at about 10:45 p.m. that Sheridan was expected to survive his injuries.

“The horses are fine,” Casazant said. “They’re good to go.”
