FARMINGTON – University of Maine at Farmington captain Heidi Parker netted the lone goal near the end of the first half, and the Beavers made the lead stand up for a 1-0 North Atlantic Conference victory over Husson in women’s soccer on Wednesday.
UMF (3-2) used offensive pressure to keep the Eagles from scoring, outshooting Husson 17-1 and forcing eight corner kicks to hold the ball out of its defensive end.
Melissa DeMerchant stopped all four shots she faced for the victory. Leah Drew had nine saves for Husson (4-4).
Harvard 2, Maine 0
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Ryan Johnson recorded 10 saves to post a shutout, as Harvard topped Maine 2-0 in women’s soccer on Wednesday afternoon.
Harvard (2-1-1) struck quickly when Charles Altchel picked up a long pass from Peter Glenmullen and flicked home a shot to the right corner just 2:29 in to the action. An insurance goal came at the 75:34 mark by Anthony Tornaritis after twin brother Nico set him up for the shot.
UNE 3, Wentworth 2
BOSTON, Mass. – The University of New England exploded for three first-half goals, then hung on in the closing stages for a 3-2 Commonwealth Coast Conference victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology Wednesday afternoon.
Scott Bromley opened the scoring in the 19th minute when he received a touch pass from Sam Bowen and pushed a shot after a Leopard turnover.
Less than four minutes later, Bowen buried what proved to be the game-winner from just outside the 18-yard box to give the Nor’Easters (2-2-1) a commanding 3-0 lead.
Wentworth scored its first goal with 3:40 left in the first half when Dan Hester put home the rebound off a midfielder Anthony LaBonte shot, which had ricocheted off the crossbar.
The Leopards pulled to within one when Dan Marra connected on a penalty shot at the 54:42 mark.
Field hockey
Thomas 1, UNE 0
BIDDEFORD – Amy Miles tipped in the rebound of a shot by Cynthia Bouchard in the opening minutes of extra time as Thomas edged the University of New England, 1-0 in sudden-death overtime of a field hockey game on Wednesday.
Miles redirected a hard shot from the top of the circle from the left side of the goal for the winning tally, propelling the Terriers (1-2) to their first win of the season.
Neither team could muster much in the way of scoring opportunities in the match, with the Nor’Easters holding a slight advantage in shots, 9-7. Jen Lane stopped five shots for the shutout victory, while her counterpart Krystal Wysocki also recorded five saves.
