AUBURN – The First Universalist Church will host a discussion Sunday on Maine’s upcoming gay rights referendum.

The Rev. Jodi Hayashida and state Rep. Deborah Pelletier-Simpson of Auburn are expected to speak at the event, beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Representatives of the group Maine Won’t Discriminate are also scheduled to attend.

The group is asking people to vote against Question 1 on the Nov. 8 ballot. The question would overturn a gay rights law passed last year by the Maine Legislature.

The law prevents people from being discriminated against for housing, employment or credit on the basis of sexual orientation.

Sunday’s event will follow a 10 a.m. service at the church, located at 169 Pleasant St. in Auburn.
