LIVERMORE FALLS – A homecoming crowd gave the Livermore Falls football team plenty of incentive at brisk Griffin Field on Friday night.
Ryan Webster romped for 237 yards on 28 rushes and scored five touchdowns as the Andies were right at home, upsetting previously unbeaten Winthrop 42-24.
Livermore Falls (1-3) utilized its three-prong attack with runners Karlton Jones (72 yards,16 rushes), Webster and Mark O’Shea (82 yards, 15 rushes), and the wing-T was executed to near perfection.
“If you work hard and continue to believe in yourselves, then good things will come,” Andies coach Brad Bishop said in a post-game chat with the team.
Winthrop (3-1) pulled to within 27-24 after freshman Jake Steele scored a 2-yard TD early in the fourth quarter. Steele gained 97 yards on nine rushes, but standout Travis Hasenfus was held to 54 yards on 15 rushes. The Ramblers feature the top-scoring offense in Western Class C.
“We knew that we needed to shut down Hasenfus,” Webster said. “The second half had been our weakness, so we knew we had to come out strong and keep up the intensity level.”
Livermore Falls scored two TDs on Webster runs of 40 and 11 yards, respectively, in the third quarter. Winthrop forced the issue by scoring on a 65-yard sprint by Steele and quarterback Travis Frautten’s 34-yard TD pass to Corey Gillespie. Frautten (five of 20 for 147 yards) also threw a 36-yard scoring strike to Jason Raymond.
The Andies answered as tackles Nate Smith and Chad Morang paved the way. Tom Gagnon kicked four PATs.
“We just played our game,” Webster said. “I ran off tackle all night and the line was blocking well. Our counters and mis-direction plays worked. Team knew that we couldn’t afford to lose another game or the playoffs would be out.”
Livermore Falls took a 14-6 lead at halftime behind Webster runs of 54 and one yards. Mike Nichols intercepted a pass and O’Shea scored in the fourth quarter.
