Perilously perched halfway up a 100-foot tree, little kitty Olivia had her mournful call answered Friday when she was delivered back to solid ground by a community rescue effort.

The 7-month-old cat found herself stuck for three days and two nights in a tree between Cram and Ridgewood avenues. Her owner and neighbors were at their wits’ end trying to release Olivia from her botanical cell.

The police and fire departments couldn’t help. Neither could animal control or public works. And, as harsh as it sounds, that’s probably for the best. A cat that can climb a tree can normally come back down, when it gets tired enough or hungry enough to overcome its acrophobia.

About two dozen of Olivia’s neighbors decided not to wait for her to face her fears. After numerous efforts by other would-be rescuers, Norm Rioux climbed the tree and returned the cat to its owner.

And thusly a neighborhood hero was born, to be remembered in tall tales about the feline and the flora. Call it the Cram Avenue Kitty Cat Caper or the Ridgewood Rescue.
