What is legal tender? That is, what is a creditor compelled by law to accept as legal payment of a debt?

In one place the U.S. Code plainly says that pennies and nickels are legal tender in payments up to 25 cents. In another, the code says silver coins of less than $1 are legal tender for sums not exceeding $10.

Every dog must have its day – or however that quote is supposed to read – and quite a few of them did the other day at the Statehouse in Augusta.

About 50 dogs, a cat and a horse led their masters in a protest march rather unheard of in recent times. It was Gov. Joseph Brennan’s budget cutting edict that brought it all on. The animals were demonstrating against an $80,000 cut in the Animal Welfare Division. This means there will be fewer state workers around to check into animal abuse complaints which add up to about 1,600 a year.

The dog’s point should have been well-taken.
