LEWISTON – Some people living in the area of College and Russell streets likely awoke late Tuesday as numbers flashed on their digital alarm clocks.

Power went out for an estimated 2,600 customers at 12:20 a.m. Tuesday when a fire erupted atop pole No. 30 on Russell Street.

Gail Rice, a spokeswoman for Central Maine Power Co., said the fire was the result of “bad insulators.” The insulators are designed to keep electrified wires from touching each other or crossbars on the utility poles.

Rice said CMP crews were able to reroute power to some customers through the Deer Rips substation. Power was fully restored to the area by 1:25 a.m., she said.
