AUBURN – Ruth Kilburn Shipton Lowe, 92, of 440 Minot Ave., died Monday, Sept. 26, at Clover Manor.

She was born in Watertown, Mass., on Sept. 28, 1912, the daughter of Ambrose Lester and Minnie Gertrude Stevens Shipton. She was educated in Watertown schools, graduating from Watertown High School in June 1930.

She was employed by John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Co., in Boston in the clerical and auditing departments from 1930 to 1966. In 1966, she married Daniel W. Lowe at St. John’s Methodist Church, Watertown; he predeceased her April 15, 1996. She also studied voice at the New England Conservatory of Music.

She was a member of the Christ Church Choir in Cambridge as alto leader for 10 years and the First Church Choir in Boston. She was also contralto soloist at St. Mark’s Methodist Church in Brookline for 15 years. She was one of the original members of Chorus Pro Musica in Cambridge, and contralto soloist and choir member of United Methodist Church in Auburn for 11 years.

She was a member of St. John’s Methodist Church in Watertown for more than 60 years, Pine Cone Chapter 26, Order of Eastern Star and First Auburn Senior Citizens since 1968. She held office as chairman of finance committee, as treasurer for the Woman’s Literary Union and W.L.U. Book Club, United Methodist Women in Auburn and as its treasurer from 1968 to 1971, and also organized study groups at the church. She was a member of the Y.W.C.A., Woman’s Hospital Association, chaplain of Western Area Agency on Aging and Stevens Mill Grange.

She is survived by a sister, Miriam Spalding of Norton, Mass.; nephews, Edward B. Spalding of North Attleboro, Mass., and John S. Spalding of Middleboro, Mass.; niece, Gail Todd of Bridgewater, Mass.; and several grandnieces and nephews.
