AUGUSTA – The state Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife is studying a plan that would expand moose hunting into southern Oxford County.

Moose hunting is already allowed in the county’s northern tier. The expansion under consideration by the state would also allow moose hunting in parts of northern Kennebec, southern Somerset, southern Piscataquis and southern Penobscot counties.

Maine’s moose population is expanding, according to the department. Earlier this year, the Legislature directed the department to study the feasibility of moose hunting farther south to help regulate the number of moose and reduce moose-vehicle collisions.

A hearing on moose hunting in Wildlife Management District 16, which includes parts of Kennebec County, is set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, at Maranacook High School Auditorium in Readfield.

A hearing on moose hunting in Wildlife Management District 15, which includes southern Oxford County, is set for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6, at Bridgton Memorial School in Bridgton.

The department is expected to submit a report to the Legislature on hunting proposals in early 2006.
