AUBURN – Lewiston Mayor Lionel Guay and Auburn Mayor Normand Guay signed a joint proclamation declaring Sept. 8 through Oct. 8 as Literacy Enhancement Days in the Twins Cities. The mayors are lending their support to a statewide effort, spearheaded by Literacy Volunteers of Maine, called “Teach, Mentor, Care.”
The purpose of “Teach, Mentor, Care” is to raise awareness of the serious literacy problem in Maine and inspire community members to become literacy volunteers.
In Androscoggin County, 18 percent of all adults are struggling with low, or non-existent, reading and writing skills. The good news is that more adults than ever before are asking for tutors. The challenge is finding the volunteers to work with them.
Literacy Volunteers-Androscoggin has more than 40 adults and families waiting for tutors. Anyone over 21, who has a 12th-grade reading level and a patient, creative temperament, can be an effective volunteer.
The next tutor training workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on two consecutive Saturdays, Oct. 15 and 22, at the Great Falls School. For information, call 753-1772.
