Dear Sun Spots: Have you thought of becoming a volunteer, but figured you didn’t have the time? Are you interested in helping people from other cultures adjust to living in our area while having fun learning about other cultures at the same time? With a time commitment of one hour a week as a conversation partner for Literacy Volunteers-Androscoggin, you can be a vital and positive link for a new Mainer while increasing your knowledge of the world.
Literacy Volunteers will match you up with a student motivated to increase his or her fluency in English. You and your partner will meet in one of many community spaces, such as the library, and talk about everyday topics, enabling the student to increase English speaking ability. Required skills are speaking English, being able to explain slang and our culture, and meeting your partner for one hour a week.
We provide a flexibly scheduled one-hour training to orient you to the program. Please help us make a difference by calling Mary, Literacy Volunteers program coordinator at (207) 344-6540. There are students on a waiting list, and we would like to match them with conversation partners in the next few weeks. We hope to hear from you. – Mary at Literacy Volunteers Androscoggin, Auburn.
Dear Sun Spots: Can you please tell me what happened to Lanie Witt on News Channel 5? We miss her. She was very good. – S. Strout, Strong.
Answer: According to a February Bangor Daily News article posted online at www.bangornews.com, Witt, a news anchor and reporter for WABI-TV 5 the past 10 years, left the station March 30 to work for Eastern Maine Healthcare, parent company of Eastern Maine Medical Center.
Witt, 34, had co-anchored the CBS affiliate’s 5:30 p.m. newscast with Jim Morris for nine of the 10 years she had been in Bangor.
At the time, Witt noted it was a difficult decision, and that her 4-year-old daughter played a role in her decision. She said then, “The older you get, the more your life changes and you have to change with it.”
She became a community relations associate with Eastern Maine Healthcare.
Dear Sun Spots: I am the chairperson for a Girl Scout service unit tea party to be held in the Litchfield area sometime in March 2006. I am looking for tea cups and matching saucers to give to each girl attending to take home with her. If any reader is able to donate some of these cups and saucers, I will be willing to pick them up or make arrangements to get them. Please contact me by e-mail at [email protected] and please ensure you include GS TEA PARTY in the subject line. Thanks. – Gladys R., No Town.
Dear Sun Spots: Montello Elementary School in Lewiston will be holding its second annual Fall Festival of Families on Saturday, Oct. 15, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Last year was a tremendous success. We are currently seeking crafters/home-based businesses to display their product at our event. This is a great way to advertise your business. It is $30 per table. Anyone interested in seeking more information contact Denise Soucy at (207) 782-2083. Space is limited so call early. – Denise Soucy, No Town.
Dear Sun Spots: Someone last week asked about Fels Naptha soap. I found some today at the Auburn Hannaford in the laundry detergent aisle, next to the Tide detergent, way up on the top shelf. It costs $1.09 per bar. Hope this will help. – B.B., Greene.
