SABATTUS – Bertrand and Aline Mercier of Sabattus celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary recently at a party at the New Auburn American Legion Club. Party hosts were sons and wives of the couple, Donald and Sue Mercier, and Daniel and Claudia Mercier.

Several centerpieces decorated the hall. Alfred Mercier was toastmaster. Two special nieces help to organize the event, Denise Alhberg of Bozeman, Mont., and Doris Griffin and daughter, Molly, of Fresno, Calif. Other guests also attended from Ohio, Montana, California and Canada.

Mr. Mercier and the former Aline Fortin were married Aug. 6, 1955, at Saints Peter and Paul Church in Lewiston. Besides their two sons, their grandchildren are Craig Mercier, who surprised his grandparents from the U.S. Coast Guard in California, Timothy Mercier of Lewiston and Colby and Stacey Major of Hartford, and two grandsons, Derek P. Mercier who died in 2001, and Daniel P. Mercier II, who died in 1981. They also have a great-grandson, Jaime Major of Hartford.

Mrs. Mercier was employed at Benoit’s and Porteous. Mr. Mercier was employed at Bates Fabrics and the Maine Turnpike Authority.

Original wedding attendants present were Alfred Mercier of Lewiston, best man, Annette Chase and Diane Douglas of Auburn, flower girl.
