Trailblazers

Fund-raiser
CANTON – A fund-raiser to benefit the victims of Hurricane Katrina and the Red Cross will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, at the Municipal Building, sponsored by the town, Canton Volunteer Fire Department and the Canton Water District.
Donations being accepted are clothing, toiletries, toys, baby items, cash donations, bed sheets, towels, non-perishable, ready-to-eat food items.
The fire department will hold a bottle drive and a car wash, with the proceeds going to the fund-raiser.

Organ concert
RUMFORD – A St. Athanasius and St. John’s centennial organ concert will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9, at the church, corner of Maine Avenue and Franklin Street. Guests organists will be Scott Vaillancourt, Nick Puiia, Michael Stone, and their own organist, Mark Belanger, who is celebrating his 25th year as choir director. Jessica Parson will be on violin with Evan Belanger on trumpet. Admission will be donations.
Horse show
ANDOVER – The Ellis River Riders will hold a horse show starting at 9 a.m. Saturday Oct. 8, at the show grounds on the Airport Road. Spectators are welcome and admission is free. There is plenty of seating and food will be served all day.
The morning classes will include English and western pleasure classes and the afternoon will be timed events like barrel racing and pole bending. For more information, visit www.ellisriverriders.com or phone 392-2381.
Essential speech
BETHEL – Dr. Mark Wasowski, doctor of chiropractic, will present “The Sixth Essential of Life,” at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, the Garland Chapel of West Parish Congregational Church.
Western Mountains Senior College is hosting the return engagement of Wasowski, who presented the first five essentials of life at a program last March. Time did not permit discussion of the sixth essential and he will devote his talk to that topic.
The program is free to college members or new members who wish to join at the meeting.
Dues are $20 and those who join by Nov. 1 will receive a voucher for $10, which may be used toward one of the courses planned over the year.

Benefit for family
RUMFORD – A hurricane relief benefit for Rumford native Tom Dayon and family will be held from noon to 11 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, at the American Legion Post 24 on Congress Street. There will be spaghetti served, steamed hot dogs and popcorn from noon until sold out. Cost is $5 at the door.
There will be live entertainment by the following: E/I Band from noon to 2:30 p.m.; Drop Zone from 3 to 6 p.m.; Tater Okee from 6:30 to 8 p.m.; and Hooligans from 8:30 to 11 p.m. There will be raffles, and a 50/50 will be drawn after each band.
