FARMINGTON – The Arts Institute’s Wednesday noontime concert series for this fall will start Wednesday, Oct. 5, with a performance by the Smith Brothers from Industry. The concert will take place from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. in Nordica Auditorium, University of Maine at Farmington.

The Smith Brothers Maine have been performing throughout the state for the past five years. They play several styles of fiddle music, mostly bluegrass and old-time as well as downeast, Celtic and modern tunes.

Jay, 16, won his first fiddle contest at the age of 8 and has been performing since he was 7. He also performs with the Mt. Blue High School and Mid-Maine Youth Orchestras on violin and was selected to the All-State Orchestra last year as a freshman.

Shane, 14, plays rhythm guitar and also picks the lead on several numbers. He has accompanied his brother, Jay, at area fiddle contests since he was 8. He also play the bass in the Mt. Blue Middle School Orchestra.

They have entertained audiences at the National Folk Festival in Bangor, the Maine Festival at Thomas Point Beach, Weeks Mills in Music, Maine Pioneers of Country Music, the East Sangerville Grange and as special guests with MacHale and the Old-Time Radio Gang.

Other performers in the series include Bill Berlinghoff, folk singer, the Mt. Blue High School Jazz Band, the Vienna Trio and the Mt. Blue String Quartet; also, Carol Hedden, recorder, with Patricia Hayden, and the Readfield Alternative School.

The noontime concerts are free, although donations are appreciated. For more information, call 645-2157.
