RUMFORD – Fred J. “Red” Elliott Jr. of Rumford and Palm Bay, Fla., died with his family at his side on Sunday, Oct. 2, at Central Maine Medical Center after a valiant struggle with lung disease.

He was born in Rumford on May 19, 1927, a son of Mary (Roach) and Fred Elliott Sr. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean conflict.

In 1947, he married Yvonne (Doucette) and on Sept. 6, they celebrated 58 years of marriage together.

He retired from Boise Cascade in 1985 after a traumatic burn injury.

He enjoyed his family and friends, reading, current events, history and his camp in Roxbury.

He was a communicant of St. Athanasius and St. John Catholic Church, and was a member of the Boise Cascade 25-year club and the American Legion.

He will be remembered for his concern for others, his dry humor, his regimens and dedication to lifelong learning.

He is survived by his wife, Yvonne; a son, Dave Elliott and wife, Elaine, of Minot; a daughter, Cynthia Rice and husband, Willie, of Poland; two brothers, William Elliott and wife, Alicia, of Melbourne, Fla., and Joseph Elliott and wife, Martha, of Rumford; as well as many extended family members.

He was predeceased by his parents; his brothers, Robert, John and Richard; and a sister, Rita Paul.
