CONCORD, N.H. – Elizabeth Blakely Couser, 88, of Farmington, died Sunday, Oct. 2, at Concord Hospital in Concord, N.H.

She was born on April 25, 1917, in Boston, the daughter of William and Ellen (Wilson) Blakely. A resident of Farmington for 38 years, she graduated from Hyde Park High School in Hyde Park, Mass., in 1934, and completed training to be a registered nurse at New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston, where she later was employed.

During World War II, she served in the U.S. Navy as a nurse at Chelsea Naval Hospital in Chelsea, Mass.

She worked for many years at Goodall Hospital in Sanford, where she was also active in her church and other social groups. After moving to Farmington in 1968, she worked in the infirmary at the University of Maine at Farmington as well as occasional shifts at Franklin Memorial Hospital.

She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Farmington, loved to play bridge with her friends and was an active member of several organizations in Farmington. She volunteered extensively for the American Red Cross, organizing many blood mobiles.

She is survived by two daughters, Susan Farkas of Marlborough, Mass., and Elizabeth Collins of Wilton, N.H.; one son, James I. Couser Jr., of Middleton, Wis.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy Buckley of Canton, Mass.

She was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, James I. Couser, who died July 5.
